Inside Tips The radio station AM 530 operates under Federal Communication Commission (FCC) guidelines as a Traveler’s Information Station. The loop message is a non-commercial transmission focusing on traffic, road and canyon conditions. The Town of Alta, Alta Ski Area and the Utah department of Transportation work together to manage the station. AM 530 began broadcasting in the winter of 1990. Transmission range, which varies with atmospheric and weather conditions, usually covers the canyon highway, and extends two to three miles from the mouth of the canyon.
The intent of the stations message is to serve as a tool for travel planning. If the authorities have temporarily restricted Highway 210 for avalanche control or if Alta has stopped incoming traffic as part of the “skiing emphasis,” AM 530 will attempt to have the information on the air at least 1/2 hour before the restriction. Whenever possible, the station will also forecast reopening times in the event of restrictions.
