Overview
“Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” This nursery rhyme comes to mind while walking through the University of Utah’s Red Butte Gardens and Arboretum, where nature blooms in both natural and planned settings. Both rare plants and local species thrive here in the main garden’s 15 acres and another 100 acres of land left in a natural state.
Enter through the new Walter P. Cottam Visitor Center, and stroll along pebbled walkways, winding past trees, shrubs, flowers and waterfalls. Would-be botanists can identify all plants by both common and botanical names. Gardeners are happy to answer and questions, or visitors may elect to join a guided tour.
Outside the main garden take an easy hiking trail or two through the natural surroundings. During the summer, spend a warm Sunday evening listening to top local and national talent during the annual summer concert series. Every Thursday at noon, home gardeners are invited to participate in mid-day get-togethers with botanical experts.
